EP. 13: Remember when it was expensive to buy an Apple product? Well, now it’s expensive to buy an apple - the produce. I mean, keeping up with the Joneses has become keeping up with the @Joneses. And it’s not just the financial cost. It’s the cost to your mental health.
Back-to-school for kids, back-to-work for adults, back-to-reality … Even if you’re not going back to school and don’t have kids, this is a notoriously tough time of year. The nostalgia and carefree days of summer are filling with cooler air and hotter pressures. Pressures to keep up with a digital gap that is rapidly growing - along with the stress and the anxiety you already face.
And when conformity is the cure for social anxiety - conformity is also the cause of it. Because if keeping up with others is a benchmark for your own success, you’re doomed to fail.
In a society that pushes its young and old to be better, bigger, stronger, skinnier, prettier, richer, and more advanced than the next person, this quest finds itself filled with sabotage. And in a world where next-generation anything is just months apart, the technological gap between generations is growing at a mind-numbing pace, in effect shortening the time span between generations.
So we will probably never catch up to kids, and they will probably never catch up to us either.
This is not a rant on why tech is bad for kids or a woe-is-me-kids-today plea … This is a look at how the digital gap is growing - along with your stress and anxiety. So, in our pursuit to be better, what’s worth it? Well, have a listen and find out!
P.S. I know things are tough. So I’ve got an incredible guest lined up for you. He’s world-renowned. Highly-sought after. And I’m pretty sure he’ll improve your life. His identity is revealed in this episode.
